Stone & Light loft is a 2nd year project focused on building empathy with other cultures through design. We were tasked to design for newcomers to Vancouver and my clients were a young family from Jordan. Through deep contextual research and analysis, a concept was developed focusing on three strategies:

1. Balance separation of space with connection across the two floors by utilizing four different partition types characterized by form, material and transparency.

2. Enhance the biophilic connection to light and shadow by integrating Mashrabiya screens as controls for the natural afternoon and evening light from the unit's west facing windows.

3. Pay homage to the warmth and history of local Jordanian materials and vernacular design by sourcing Local and imported finishes, textiles and furnishings with a similar look and feel.
